Furthermore, regulations in China and other major economies are in favour of the development and use of renewable energy. This means that there is a ready market for renewable energy products. VC firms can capitalise on this opportunity by helping in the commercialisation of renewable energy technologies. Despite the opportunities, VC firms face a number of risk including market adoption risk, people risk, regulatory risk, exit risk and technology risk. These risks can be mitigated by putting in place appropriate strategies. Many different authors form a variety of time periods incorporate religious ideas and philosophies into their writings. A few authors from different time periods that did this were Johnathan Edwards, Anne Bradstreet, and Henry David Thoreau. Anne Bradstreet was a Puritan. Much like all the other Puritans of her time she examined her conscience daily and that they always felt that they were humbled by Gods creations and powers. Many things are in place to make sure every child is safe and is been given the best start in life. At my setting our safeguarding policy includes what to do if you have a concern about a child and who to go to. The children act 2004 focus on 5 outcomes (from Every Child Matters); being healthy, staying safe, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and achieving economic well-being. This act makes sure all settings have policies in place to make sure we are all treating children with care and are kept safe and healthy. In our setting wehave the Safegaurding ploicy which sets out what we must do in the case of a safegaurding incident. 1. 2 Explain child protection within the wider concept of safeguarding children and young people. Child protection is in the children act 2004 it explains what we could do to help protect children. At our setting we have a number of other settings and policies that help us to safeguard children. One of the is Health and safety policy this protects children and we have to make sure that sandbank nursery is a clean and safe working environment for both children and staff. This means no children would be under any risk as every thing is checked daily when we do a daily risk assessment of the outside area and the nursery. Also to help protect children we have a parent group on Wednesday and family support workers come in and have different discussions to the parents about how to deal with different situations involving the children this gives the parents knowledge in what is the appropriate way to handle situations. At work at nursery we are always making sure children are kept safe at the nursery we make sure all doors have coded locks so only staff with crbs can get in and out. We have milk and fruit for snack time to make sure children are having something healthy to eat, this is in the food policy Children in nursery and Playcare are provided with a variety of healthy snacks mid session: for example fruit, crumpets, toast, sandwiches, boxes of raisins, carrot sticks, cheese and biscuits. They are offered milk or water alongside their snack. We also try to educate parents so they know how to give the children a healthy diet. When we are out on trips and visits we do a risk assessment to make sure everything was safe enough for the children, we do risk assessments because it is stated in the health and safety policy. 1. 4. Explain when and why inquiries and serious case reviews are required and how the sharing of the findings inform practice. Serious case reviews happen when something serious has happened to child for example a child has died due to abuse. The case is reviewed so lessons can be learned from what has happened and actions are put into place so that it wont happen again. 1. 5 Explain how the processes used by own work setting or service comply with legislation that covers data protection, information handling and sharing. When sharing information about children to other settings you have to make sure you are following the data protection act 1998 you must make sure the information is; used fairly and lawfully, used for limited, specifically stated purposes, used in a way that is relevant, accurate, kept for no longer than necessary, kept safe and secure. 2. 1 Explain the importance of safeguarding children and young people. Safeguarding is the most important part of working with children and young people. If no body used the Children Act 2004 and safeguarding policies a lot of children would be in serious danger of having a poor quality of life. The polices do not just protect children but also the staff that work with them. we use it to teach them about staying safe and also to protect themselves outside of the setting. 2. 2 Explain the importance of a child or young person centered approach. Everything nursery, health visitors, social services and sure starts do are for the good of the individual child. Thats why everything is looked at with great detal to ensure what is being done is best for the child. All services must revolve around a child ad their needs to ensure positive outcomes. 2. 3 Explain what is meant by partnership working in the context of safeguarding. When it comes to safeguarding settings and services work together to make sure children are getting support. They do this by meeting together and making sure information is shared correctly and there is a good form of communication. this is to make sure that children are at the center of all that we do and so that they are put first at all times whilst they are having their needs met. 2. 4 Describe the roles and responsibilities of the different organizations that may be involved when a child or young person has been abused or harmed. Health visitors and nurseries would have to report to social services about what they have seen e. g. cuts, bruises. Social workers would organize meetings to discuss information and findings. They would also be the ones who make the decisions about moving the child out of the home or getting police involved. 3. 2 and 3. 4 To protect children and adults who work with them we make sure all adults have crbs. Mobile phones are locked away from children and when a child has an accident it documented in the accident dated and signed and parents sign. When we are on trips we take a phone with us with no camera on so we can still contact people on emergency. We also do risk assessments to check that it is safe enough for children to go. 3. 3. Evaluate ways in which concerns about poor practice can be reported whilst ensuring that whistle blowers and those whose practice or behavior is being questioned are protected. The whistleblowing policy is in place to ensure if concerns were raised about poor practice the people who question this are protected. The whistleblowing policy states a worker can report things that arent right are illegal or if anyone at work is neglecting their duties. You can complain in different ways written, waiting till you are able to go to see the head teacher when no one else is there. Ringing the head teacher in own time so no one knows it is you who has made the complaint. The best option in my eyes would be to ring the head teacher in my own time so no one knows it is me. Doing it this way would also protect the person you are complaining about because if your complaint is found out to be not true then the person you have complained about will still be protected. 4. 1 Describe the possible signs, symptoms, indicators and behaviors that may concern in the context of safeguarding. Signs I look out for that gives me concerns that a child is being harmed or mistreated are physical signs such as cuts/bruises, looking dirty, clothing too small/big. Change in the childs behavior is also a big sign of a hild being mistreated. Sometimes a child will go quiet and withdrawn or the complete opposite and will do everything they can to get our attention hurting other children, throwing, not listening etc. 4. 2 Describe the actions to take if a child or young person alleges harm or abuse in line with policies and procedures of own setting. If a child told me they were being abused at home I would write down exactly what was said the time and date and take it to the head teacher who deals with the safe guarding of children. This information would be passed on to social services who would then decide with the head teacher what to do next including involving the police. However if the child doesnt directly disclose to you you still need to document any signs you see for example bruises, cuts, looking dirty, seeing how mom and child relationship is. 4. 3 Explain the rights that children, young people and their careers have in situations where harm or abuse is suspected or alleged. If the case of a child alleged abuse the child has the right of confidentiality and the only people who should know about it are those who are necessary. The person suspected of the abuse also has the rights to confidentiality because if its not true then the persons reputation would be ruined. The child also as the right to communication which means the child should be told whats happening and why it is happening. Also the child has the right to support which means through out every thing thats going on the child has help and support along the way. 5. 1 Explain different types of bullying and the potential effects on children and young people. There are different types of bullying; Physical, Emotional and cyber bullying. The effects of bullying on children are physical like bruises, cuts etc. Emotionally lack of confidence depression, not wanting to go to school etc. 5. 2 Outline the policies and procedures that should be followed in response to concerns or evidence of bullying and explain the reasons why they are in place. Whether its staff or children being bullied there is any concerns or evidence of bullying it is dealt with straight away. Staff are spoken to and the subject is looked into. If a serious case the member of staff who is bullying will be dismissed. For a child parents are brought and a meeting takes place of what can be done to stop the bullying. 5. 3 Explain how to support a child or young person and /or their families when bullying suspected or alleged. A support team would be there to help a child and/or their families when bullying is suspected; They would be offered counseling, extra sessions to catch up on work they have missed and fun sessions to help build confidence back up. 6. 1 Explain how to support children and young peoples self-confidence and self-esteem. To build a childs self-confidence and self-esteem up your would praise them when they do something good. The elements of drama Essay The elements of drama we used were contrasts and climax/anti-climax. We used contrasts in the scene by making the park seem spooky and lonely, whereas in his memories they were warm and with his friends. It helped by making the story richer, and made each moment of happiness and despair stand out from each other. So therefore it made it bigger and more dramatic. We used climax/anti climax throughout the scene. In each memory the tension that was built up was released when he realised the turn of events were happy and so the suspense was lost in an anti climax. However, at the end, the suspense was built up by making the ghost of the pilot walk slowly whilst looking long and hard into the mans eyes. Each step built up more and more tension until the man shook the ghost. This was the climax of the scene and made it more effective as it surprised the audience after all the tension that was built up. It helped our scene as it made it more exciting to watch. We used mime to convey the newspaper holding the deaths of all his loved ones. We did this by gestures such as unfolding the newspaper and flicking through the pages and looking like it was being read. We did this to maintain the silence, yet still make our actions clear. We used space and levels to express the relationships between the characters. When the man was with his friends he was at the same levels as them to convey a sense of friendship and equality in status. The space between the ghost of the pilot and the man was a lot at first, which symbolised how they had no relation to each other. But as the ghost moved closer towards the man it symbolised how his confession would bring him closer to the man. When creating the scene we wanted our audience to feel concerned and scared by feeling compassion for the man and so they would be anxious for him.  The atmosphere we created was a misty park where he had lost his only companion in the park. The sense of desertion made the atmosphere cold and mysterious which helped the audience to feel scared and concern. We did this by acting out walking in the mist, and the haunting whistle that pierced their ears at vital moments to make it more and more mysterious and terrifying. My understanding of the text has been developed through the use of explorative strategies, drama mediums and elements of drama. By characterisation (element of drama) I have learnt how it felt for Mr Kipps in the text where he is lost and is desperately clinging on to Spider, his only remaining companion in the misty moors. Thought tracking (explorative strategy) has helped me understand the different moments in the text and how his fear could have been heightened at certain points; this made me understand his different actions and how his desperation increased throughout the text. The use of voice (drama medium) has helped me understand the text by knowing that the whistle could have been interpreted in so many different ways. It could have been a sign of hope or of despair which lead him to chase after Spider. By using these strategies, elements and mediums my understanding of drama has improved. I have learnt that plot and content of the story can be developed and improved by using them. For example the element of drama: characterisation has made me understand how to develop a character and how it has helped developing my comprehension of acting in doing so. Drama mediums have also improved my understanding. I never understood the use of sound/music and now I have come to realise it can emphasise and collaborate with a scene to improve and compliment the actions on stage instead of distracting them from it. An explorative strategy such as cross-cutting has helped me understand the variety and depth that can be included in a scene. In conclusion these strategies, elements and mediums have greatly developed my understanding of drama.

The Statistics showed that my life would hold challenges for me. At the age 5 I was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia - most common type of leukemia in children under age 10. It was a cancer of the white blood cells, the cells in the body that normally fight infections. Having to Deal with this at a young age put a burden on me. To make the situation worse my parents decided to give up full custody of me that meant adoption, My grandparents took me in a small child with hope and dreams of a better day. It was weird for me because as soon as the adoption took place my father left to Louisianan And my mom lived down the Street from my grandparents. When I was older my parents started to come back into mylife.It has taken me so many years to become a member of their new families. I understand as a young man now that their actions benefited me. It has even more difficult having affiliations with family members who are part of La Eme. Im only 16,and yet I have seen it all from death and hard times to good times. Thermosets have the property of being able to be shaped only once while thermoplastics can be reheated and remolded to several attempts. Educational Coaches Essay Educational or instructional coaches – also called â€Å"master teachers† – in elementary and secondary education are facilitators who train other teachers to improve instructional practices and generate higher levels of student achievement (Buly et al, 2004). Specifically, they are trained to serve as support for schools and districts experiencing â€Å"market failure;† i. e. , that have large numbers of students unable to meet state and federal achievement standards (Buly et al, 2004). This document is written as an outline to provide qualitative and quantitative evidence (in economic and real terms) that justifies educational managers (elementary, middle and high school principals, superintendents and school board members) utilizing educational/instructional coaches to achieve the following goals: (1) improving aggregate output through schools’ and districts’ overall level of student achievement on state- and/or federally-mandated testing, and (2) improving micro-level behavior through resource allocation, individual classroom management, implementation of learning strategies and instruction of subject matter. Consequently, educators continuously strive to make the educational marketplace more efficient and productive; i. e. , they search for methods and tools that improve the process of and environment for learning and address the diverse and changing needs of teachers and students. Unfortunately, the field of education is constrained by limits, and the equitable and efficient distribution of income (state and federal funding) and other resources (teachers) remains an issue that managers (educational administrators such as superintendents, school board members and principals) must address annually. In 1989, an educational organization called the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) developed America’s Choice, a school design model based on high quality instructional materials, technical support and professional development for teachers (NCEE, 2009). Educational/instructional coaches are a central component of America’s Choice (NCEE, 2009). The goal of this paper is to determine whether or not educational managers are making the most fiscally responsible decision when hiring educational/instructional coaches to meet district- and school-based needs. While educational/instructional coaches are an often-used solution in some school districts, managers have other alternatives available to provide support to teachers and students in the classroom. These options utilize different methods of resource allocation. One alternative to â€Å"classroom coaching† is making capital improvements. An example of a capital improvement is upgrading a district’s and/or school’s technological infrastructure. This would involve purchasing computers and/or networks with more memory and larger capacities for data storage and manipulation, increasing the value and useful life of a district’s or school’s technological infrastructure. This could also involve purchasing software such as web-based educational tools for both students and teachers to use. Another option is additional training for teachers through in-service workshops (training provided during the school day) or additional education courses (college and/or university level). A third alternative is realignment of the student-teacher ratio based on aggregate demand; i. e. , the total demand (number of students) for goods (teachers/classes) and services (instruction) in the educational market (classroom). A fourth alternative is awarding financial bonuses to teachers with high or greatly improved student achievement rates. Educational/Instructional Coaches: Their Economic Costs and Factors When evaluating the benefits of using educational/instructional coaches, educational managers must ask themselves, â€Å"What are the accounting and opportunity costs of this decision? † In other words, managers need to determine expenses like salary, benefits, health insurance for the educational/instructional coaches; they also must construct the benefits of other educational options. According to payscale. com, a global, online compensation database, the average salary for K-12 public school teachers in the United States is $42,000 annually for a nine-month school year (Payscale, Inc. , 2009). Educational coaches are often at the top tier for teachers’ salaries and make on average $52,000 each year (Payscale, Inc. , 2009). Thus, the opportunity cost of hiring an educational coach at a school is, on average, $52,000 annually. An educational manager have an additional $52,000 (plus the cost of insurance and benefits) within his/her budget to invest in computer hardware, software, training for existing teachers, or actually hiring a new teacher (thereby reducing the teacher/student ratio). If a school principal hired more than one educational coach – many schools have one for every major academic discipline – the costs would be even greater. Across a school district, the aggregate costs would be much larger. For example, Duval County Public Schools is a school district in Jacksonville, Florida, has 160 schools, and uses America’s Choice, employing educational coaches at all 160 schools (Duval County Public Schools, 2009). At the very least, Duval County Public Schools’ accounting cost for hiring 160 educational coaches would be (on average) approximately 8. 32 million dollars annually, not including benefits and insurance. While educational managers must consider costs, they must also contend with economic factors. There are a wide range of economic factors that affect educational managers’ ability to hire educational coaches. Some of the most important are federal and state government policies, school district management, taxation, and student achievement levels. Before educational managers can make hiring decisions, school districts must meet state and federal approval through accreditation (Duval County Public Schools, 2009). Accreditation is the process by which â€Å"an official body gives authority to something when recognized standards are met† (Lindberg, Ed. , 2004, p. 8). The governing body for public schools in the southern part of the United States is the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS). In October 2008, SACS awarded Duval County Public Schools full accreditation, which indicates the district complied with meeting state and federal standards for student achievement (Duval County Public Schools, 2009). Schools must be accredited to hire new staff. Thus, the accreditation process was necessary before educational managers could hire educational coaches. Another factor affecting the hiring process is district management. Before principals can finalize hiring any new educators, including educational coaches, the new hires must be approved by the school board (Duval County Public Schools, 2009). The school board is â€Å"a local authority responsible for the provision and maintenance of schools† (Lindberg, Ed. , 2004, p. 1220). In Duval County Public Schools, for example, the school board must vote on whether or not they approve principals hiring educational coaches. Another factor affecting the hiring of educational coaches is funding. Funding for school districts is a fiscal policy issue and comes from a combination of local, state and federal sources (Howell Miller, 1997). Local funding is generally financed by property taxes (Howell Miller, 1997). State financing is generally through sales taxation (Howell Miller, 1997). Both local and state taxation are affected by state policy decisions and voting decisions of the population (Howell Miller, 1997). For example, a governor may issue a proposition to reduce property taxes across a state. If the population votes to accept the tax reduction, the funds available to make hiring decisions are reduced. While federal monies are financed through national income tax, these come to schools and schools districts via an assortment of federally mandated programs, often for at-risk student populations (U. S. Department of Education, 2007). For example, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is the most recent federal education legislation. Enacted in 2001, NCLB is an initiative of former U. S. President George W. Bush and it authorizes the distribution of educational grants for low-income students, textbooks, professional development for educators and more (U. S. Department of Education, 2007). Often a school’s student population determines how much and if that school can receive federal funding (U. S. Indecision, Hesitation and Delay in Shakespeares Hamlet Essay

Hesitation in Hamlet   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   William Shakespeare's Hamlet is tragic because all of the enmity being the product of one man's inability to make decisions. I believe the play is showing the steps of hesitation a person goes through who cannot choose, and the resultant angst. This one man is Prince Hamlet. Throughout the play he comes into situations where he just can't move himself into action. In Act I, Scene 5 Hamlet has an encounter with a ghost who explains that it is Hamlet's deceased father. After a little while of talking the ghost tells Hamlet that he did not die of natural causes, but was in fact murdered. When the ghost says this Hamlet replies with: "Haste me to know't, that I, with wings as swift As meditation or the thoughts of love May sweep to my revenge." (Lines 29-31) Hamlet is swearing to avenge his father's death as fast as possible. The ghost then tells Hamlet that the villain who committed the murder was the King's own brother Claudius. This surprises Hamlet, but he knows he made a vow and he must stick to it, he then says: "So, uncle, there you are. Now to my word: It is, Adieu, adieu, remember me. I have sworn't." (I.V. Lines 110-111) After the scene with the ghost the reader would most likely believe that an enraged Hamlet gone straight to Claudius' room to kill him. This is the first incident when Hamlet is observed being incapable of making decisions. In Act II, Scene 2, two scenes after Hamlet was about to kill the king, he still hasn't done it, but during this scene Hamlet comes in contact with a group of traveling actors and asks them to play for the king. Hamlet tells us in this next quote of his tragic flaw of indecision and of his plan ... ...gh out the play tearing at his soul. However, scholars blame colonialism for the problems facing the south. The effects of colonialism were severe to an extent that solutions to problems are inapplicable (Khalid 2012, p. 18). Environmental Challenge The last challenge pertains to the environment. Environmental challenges are faced by all countries in the world. It is one of the common problems faced by both countries of the south and north. The depletion of the ozone layer affects all people in the world, irrespective of the region. However, states in the international system have failed to agree on how to preserve the environment. For instance, countries of the south claim that countries of the north must fund programs aimed at preserving the environment. It can help you figure out if you’re interested in a career in research. It’s also a good activity for your college application, especially if you win awards. I should know! I placed 3rd in my state science fair and won an award from NASA #sciencenerd #brushingdirtoffmyshoulders. What exactly is science fair? How do you compete and win? In this guide, I’ll explain exactly what you need to do to develop winning high school science fair projects and why you should consider participating in this challenging but fun extracurricular. What Is Science Fair? Science Fair is a competition at which students (in grades 6-12) present the results of a scientific experiment thatthey conducted. The experiment must fall into one of the following categories (this may vary slightly depending onthe state you live in): Animal Biology Animal Physiology Behavioral / Social Science Biochemistry / Molecular Biology Chemistry Earth/Space Sciences Ecology Engineering Applications Engineering Research Environmental Management Mathematics Computer Science Microbiology Pharmacology Physics Plant Biology Plant Physiology There are two levels of science fair competition, middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). I’m going to focus on high school science fair competitions, but much of my advice holds true for middle school science fair competitions as well. Some high schools conduct an in-school science fairthenadvance their winners to the county or regional science fair.This varies by state. Some states have regional science fairs (where several counties are grouped into one competition) while other states have individual county science fairs. Some such as California have a mix of regional and county science fairs. The winners of the county or regional science fair then advance on to the state science fair. Each state hosts their own science fair and selects winners. Who Can Compete in High School Science Fair? Any high school student with a project idea that fits into one of the above categories can compete in science fairs!However, each high school is only allowed a specific number of entries into the regional or county science fair.This may vary slightly from region to region.The maximum number of entries per school into the RegionalScience Fair is usually around 13. Most high schools host a school-wide science fair to decide who they’ll send to the RegionalScience Fair.Small schools may just send all interested students (without hosting a school-wide science fair) if they have less than 13 projects to send. How Do You Sign Up for Science Fair? Talk to your guidance counselor about how to sign up to compete in science fair.Usually, one of the science teachers at your high school will be in charge of science fair for your school. Ask your guidance counselor who that person is, then check with that person to learn what you need to do to sign up.You’ll likely need to have a good idea of what your project will be when yousign up! You should sign up as soon as you can.If you’re a Freshman, sign up as soon as you start school.If you’re a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior, you also should sign up at the start of the school year, or sign up at the end of the previous school year to compete the following year. Deadlines will vary from school to school andregionto region.The important thing is to sign up as soon as you decide you want to compete in the science fair; depending on your project idea, you might need special approval before you can sign up or start your experiment. How to Develop High School Science Fair Projects When brainstorming science fair project ideas, I recommend starting with the science fair competition categories (see above).Are any of the areas of particular interest to you?Is there a burning question you had in one of your science classes that you’d like to try and answer? Was there a recent scientific discovery that you found interesting? What was interesting about it? Is there something else you’d like to test that’s related to that discovery? Is there a problem you have, or you see in the world? Do you have an idea of how to fix it?For example, I’d always been interested in how oil spills were cleaned up. I knew bacteria and fungi were sometimes used to clean up oil spills, and I wanted to know which was faster at cleaning up oil spills.That ultimately was the topic of my science fair project. If all of this is drawing a blank, I recommend reading some articles on Science Daily to see if you find anything interesting.Why is it interesting? Do you want to know something more? Once you have your basic project concept, read each of the three considerations below to make sure it's a top-notch idea. Consideration #1: Is it a Good Science Fair Project Idea? What makes a good science fair project idea? I'm defining "good" in this context as a project that will grab the attention of judges and give you a better chance of winning awards. A good science fair project idea will meet the following qualifications: Be unique. Try to come up with an original concept. How do you test the originality of your concept? Do a Google search for your potential idea. If you come up with 5 or more exact matches for your idea, consider picking a different one. If you come up with less than 5 matches,you might have a good project idea! Beapplicable in some way. Try to come up with aproject that will be useful to the world. For example, the results of my project (whether bacteria or fungi cleaned up oil faster) would help in the event of future oil spills. Someone could use the results of my experiment and clean up an oil spill more efficiently. Projects don't need to change the world, but it is helpful if the results of the experiment mean something. As another example, let's look at anaward-winning project from 2015.For this project, the student took chicken breasts and sutured them together in 3 different ways. The student then ran a test to see which of the 3 sutures held together longest under heavy weight. The results of this experiment apply tothe field of medicine. A surgeonmay choose to use the suture technique that held together the longest in lieu of the other suture techniques. What's an example of a non-applicable project? In my middle school science class, we conducted an experiment to see if ketchup or mustard would run down an incline faster. This experiment really had no application to the real world. Consideration #2: Is the Project Idea Feasible? After doing this preliminary round of brainstorming, start to think about feasibility.Can you realistically conduct this experiment with the resources you have at yourdisposal and in the given time frame (likely a month or two - depending on how early you start)? Next, create a basic schedule so you stay on track.I recommend that you conduct yourexperiment and finish it at least 2 weeks before the science fair.You need time to organize the data, write up the results, get the board made, etc. (I’ll discuss this more in-depth below.) For resources, do you have access to a lab through your high school? If you don’t, consider reaching out to local community college professors or to local scientists to see if someone would be willing to be your mentor for your science fair project and let you use their facilities.The mentor would be there to oversee your use of their facilities. It’s doubtful a lab would let you use their facilities without a supervisor. For example, for my project, I needed an incubator thatneither my school nor I had. Luckily, my uncle worked at the local community college and was able to get me access to a mentor and the incubator at the lab. Also, make sure that whatever project you choose you can complete withinyour given time frame.For example, don’t plan to measure how bird population size changes over 5 years after the introduction of a predator species.This is a terrible idea for 2 reasons.One, you don’t have 5 years to conduct an experiment to present at the science fair.Two, you definitely wouldn’t be allowed to introduce a predator into the wild. Some project ideas will require a much larger time commitment that others. Take this into consideration when picking your project.How much time do you have in your schedule to dedicate to science fair? Some projects might only take a single day or weekend.For example, if your experiment wasdetermining which acidic fruit could conduct the most electricity, you could do it in a day. All you would need to do is buy the fruit and buy an electrical conductivity meter. Stick the meter in the fruit and write down the results. Others require you to do something every day for several weeks or months.For example, if your experiment was determining whether fungi or bacteria is better at cleaning up an oil spill, you’ll need a lot more time and advanced planning. You’ll need to monitor your Petri dishes on a daily basis for several weeks to track the progress. Consideration #3: Does Your Project Follow Science Fair Rules? My next point is aboutfeasibility. What experiments are you allowed to do for science fair?Most states have rules regarding the types of science fair experiments students can conduct. Beyond having to fit your experiment into one of their categories (as I mentioned above), you have to obey certain rules about the use of animals, humans, animal tissue, human tissue, hazardous materials, and/or microbes in your experiment.The use of these things isnot prohibited (I used microbes in my experiment). However, you need to get approval in certain cases. These rules will vary by state, so find your state’s and county’s science fair rules by searching Google for â€Å"[State Name] Science Fair Rules† or â€Å"[County Name] County Science Fair Rules.† If one of the potential experiment ideas that you brainstormed passes each of the considerations mentioned (i.e. you have the resources to complete the experiment in the time allowed without breaking any rules), then you should next try to nail down more specificcomponents of the experiment. How to Go From an Idea to Reality Once you've come up with a good science fair project idea that's feasible and doesn't break any rules, how do you take it from an idea to reality? Start by trying to phrase the idea as a question.All experiments should answer a question. What is the question you're trying to answer? For my experiment (on bacteria and fungi cleaning up oil spills), my question was "do bacteria or fungi clean up oil spills faster?" Once you have your question, try to figure out what your independent variable, dependent variable, and controlshould be for your experiment. The independent variable is what you change in the experiment, and the dependent variable is what changes as a result of the change you made. For my experiment, the independent variable is whether bacteria or fungi is used. The dependent variable is how much oil was cleaned up.The control is what you use as the standard of comparison for your other samples. It ensures the reliability of your test by showing nothing else was affecting the results. For example, in my experiment, the control was simply oil in a Petri dish with nothing else. If oil had dissipated from that control Petri dish, I would know there was something else affecting the cleanup of oil. After figuring out your variables, try to figure out how you will measure the results.This can often be the trickiest part of planning your experiment. For my experiment, I checked the Petri dishes once per week for 2 months. At each visit, I put the Petri dishes on a grid and countedthe number of grids that didn't have oil in them. This was not a perfect measurement, but I didn't have any better tools at my disposal. If you're having trouble coming up with the question, variables, or measurement for your project idea, consider talking to your science teacher(s). Theywill likely have advice on what question, variables, and measurements to use. These teachers have seen many years worth of science fair projects and will know if your project is feasible and can give you advice on how to best execute the project. You can alsoresearch similar projects online with a simple Google search. See how those experiments were conducted and if you could do something similar. Once you come up with your idea, you need to get it approved by your science fair coordinator before starting the experiment.Your science fair coordinator is likely one of the science teachers at your school. Ask your science teacher or your counselor who the science fair coordinator is.The coordinatorwill know if you need to submit paperwork before starting your project or if you can get started without further paperwork. How to Present Your Science Fair Project At the science fair, you'll be expected to have a board that presents the results of your experiment and a packet that is basically a printed version of your board. On the day of the science fair, you'll spend most of the time standing next to your board waiting for a judge to approach you. The judges are typically volunteers with a science background (former science teachers or scientists). You will present your entire experiment to the judges, and then they will typically ask you a few questions about your experiment (I'll discuss this more in-depth below). You'll likely go through this process more than once. At some science fairs, you present to each judge individually (most fairs have at least 3 judges per category). Also, some science fairs have additional judges from companies that give out supplemental awards. For example, at my state science fair, NASA sent their own judge that, separate from the state judges, heard presentations and asked questions. You might also be asked about your experiment by parents and fellow science fair competitors. What Should You Include on Your Science Fair Board? I've includedanexample of a science fairboard below to demonstrate how your board should look. The actual topic of this board is a little too juvenile for a high school science fair (it was probably presented at a middle school science fair), but the visual presentation of the board is the same as you'd expect atthe high school level. Flickr/Oddharmonic Before we dive into the content of the board, you should make sure the board is visually appealing. Make sure it isn't too cluttered. Make sure to include some pictures or graphics (I'll discuss this more below). Your board's appearance will be the first impression people have of your experiment, so make sure it's a good first impression. At the top of your board, you should have the title of the experiment. It can be something clever like the one in the picture (the experiment was trying to find out if shampoo helped carnations hold color dye better) or it can be more basic (i.e. Does Shampoo Help Carnations Hold Dye?). The front page of your presentation packet should be a cover page with your experiment name and your name. In the following section, Ilistwhat you should include inboth your board and in your packet. Examples (using the carnation experiment) are highlighted in blue: Problem (or Experimental Question):What was the question you were trying to answer with your experiment? Does shampoo help carnations hold color dye better than acetone? Hypothesis: What did you think the answer to that question is? I think shampoo will help carnations hold color dye better than acetone. Materials:What did you use to conduct your experiment? 24 carnations, Dove brand shampoo, red color dye, acetone, a measuring cup, etc. Variable:What was the independent variable, dependent variable, control? As I said before, the independent variable is what you change. The dependent variable is what changes because of it. The independent variable iswhether acetone or shampoo was used. The dependent variable is the color of the carnations. Procedure:What steps did you follow to conduct the experiment (be as detailed as possible). 1. Place 2 carnations into a vase with 2 ml of shampoo, 2 ml of red dye, and 2 ml of water. 2. Place another 2 carnations into a separate vase with 2 ml of acetone, 2 ml of red dye, and 2 ml of water. Data/Graphs:What data did you collect? Can you present it as a table or graph? (If you can, you should.) After two days, the carnations in the shampoo mixture were pink, and the carnations in the acetone mixture were red. Conclusion:What were the results of the experiment? I found that the carnations absorbed the dye better with acetone than with shampoo. The carnations in the acetone mixture turned a deep red while the carnations in the shampoo mixture only became a light pink. As I said above, when presenting your experiment, you’ll be asked questions about your experiment. How can you best prepare for these questions? Most importantly, know your project details inside and out. Know how your project results applyto the real world.For example, if your experiment is which fruit has the most conductivity, you could discuss how viable an option fruit is as a source of alternative energy (even if it’s not).Even if your experiment would not be realistic in the real world, it is great to show that your knowledge of science goes beyond your project. Brainstorm what questions you might be asked. Some examples include:How did you come up with the idea for your experiment?What did you use as your control? What do your results tell you? Then, try to answer all of the questions you’ve brainstormed.Write your answers down.Perfect them.This way you’ll be prepared to eloquently answer the questions you’re asked. What Are the Benefits of Participatingin Science Fair? Competing in science fair has many benefits. Through science fair, you'll get to meet like-minded students who are interested in science. If you get to go on to county/regional/state competitions, you'll make science-interested friends from other schools as well! Science fair is a great opportunityto test out whether you’d like to pursue a career in scientific research. It's great to try and find your passion in high school so you don't waste time and money during college trying to figure out what you want to major in.By doing science fair, hopefully, you'll find out if science isa subject you want to continue studying or not. If you compete in science fair, you can potentially be recognized for your scientific ability by receivingawards from your school, county, region, state, or other science fair sponsors (such as NASA). If you win an award, it looks great onyour college application. Colleges love to see students who were recognized for their talents!Additionally, science fair is a free experience that won’t cost you anything other than time and maybe a little money for supplies for your experiment.I highly recommend competing in science fair if you’re interested! There are a couple of cons to competing in science fair. Science fair can be extremely time-consuming. Ifyou're worried about not having enough time, I recommend doing a more manageable project (an experiment that can be completed in a shorter time frame). Sciencefair projects do not need to take a lot of time. Just because an experiment doesn't require a lot of time doesn't make it any less sophisticated than other more time-consuming projects. Also, some studentsfind science fair boringif they don't care that much about science. I still think it's valuable to try science fair once if you have any interest in science. If you find science fair boring then, at least, you figured out science is probably not your desired career path, and you can move on to exploring your other interests. What’s Next?
